What Ian loves most about being a fitness instructor: “Teaching and training in the martial arts industry has been a rewarding process of ongoing learning, growing, and developing.” Born and raised in beautiful Syracuse, New York, Sensei Ian Hewitt has been practicing martial arts since the young age of 6. His parents wanted to instill virtues in him including confidence, as well as help him learn self-defense techniques, and realized martial arts was an excellent way to do so. In 1991, Sensei Ian earned his 1st degree black belt at 11 years old. At just 13, he was driven to help others develop confidence, self-esteem, safety awareness, and self-defense, so he became a martial arts teacher. Sensei Ian received his bachelor of science degree from Oswego State University in 2002. Shortly after, he began teaching martial arts as a career. Since January 2005, he has managed and operated a martial arts academy in Boca Raton. He opened the doors here at Focus in November 2012, helping children and adults in South Florida live healthier lives, physically and mentally. Sensei Ian is a 6th degree black belt ranked under Shihan Jim Andrello out of Syracuse, New York, and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ranked under Coach Shaun Hahn out of Rochester, New York.
